The Ellen Matthews Trophy finals were held this year at Fressingfield Bowls Club on Sunday 11th August. The extreme gales of the previous day had moderated, with conditions blustery but dry. The 3rd-4th place play-off match between Area A and Area B was played in the morning, with Area B coming out the winners.
The trophy match was between Area C and Area D, a re-match of last year`s final. This year the tables were turned with a convincing win by Area D, 123 shots to 78. There were good wins on four rinks, with one drawn. The winners of the thimbles for Area D were Shirley White (Walsham-le-Willows BC), Celia Gordon (Tuddenham BC) and Sue Chapman (Thorndon BC), with a 26-12 win. The best rink thimbles for Area C went to Jean Hughes, Linda Fairs and Sally Fisher (23-17).

At the start of this afternoon`s match, the Suffolk ladies knew that a four rink win against Northamptonshire (16 points to 2) would take them above Norfolk in the Silver Jubilee Vase (South) competition, with Norfolk having played all their games. Suffolk made a nervy start to the match, with Northants ahead on four rinks around the middle of the game., However, Suffolk fought back as the game progressed, possibly spurred on by the arrival of Carole Swan, National President. Carole and the Suffolk supporters were treated to a superb comeback by the Suffolk team and saw Jan Truin`s block draw level with two ends to go. After one Suffolk block had lost, a win on this rink would secure the one point needed to go ahead of Norfolk. The tension increased when they drew level with a two in the 24th end. Happily, they were able to seal it in the last end, eventually winning 27-26. The thimbles were won by Pam Ward, Paula Gooch and Angela Mondon, whose rink won by 33-12.
After the match Carole Swan joined the team photograph and we were delighted that she was able to stay to enjoy a meal with the teams. With Huntingdonshire due to play Northamptonshire on 10th July, there is still an anxious wait to establish whether the ladies will be representing the Southern area at Skegness, but hopes are high.

Area C had a good day at Bramford on Sunday 30th June playing our Area Finals. The weather was hot but fortunately there was a bit of a breeze which helped the bowlers. Huge thanks to those bowlers who were in more than one competition, especially Sue Hender who was through in four! Bramford`s green was in superb condition. Thanks go to Jason Smith the Green keeper for all his hard work. Many thanks go to Barbara Rushbrook for umpiring for the day and helping me to ensure the players were on the green on time. Thanks also to my markers Joe Sims, Ken Laws, Helen Swift and Sally Fisher. Also many thanks to Joyce and her team for working hard in the kitchen. Good luck ladies at the County Semi-finals on Saturday at Ipswich and District BC.

The Suffolk County Women`s Bowls Association President, Mrs Rosemary Gyford, welcomed a crowd of Suffolk`s lady bowlers (and a few select men) to celebrate her President`s Day and to mark the Diamond Jubilee of the SCWBA (1959-2019). As befits such an important occasion, the weather was on our side, with threatening shower clouds passing over without dampening our spirits.
An interesting display of the 60 years history of the SCWBA was a focus of attention on arrival, while refreshments were enjoyed. The afternoon`s bowling commenced with an unusual spider. Umpire, Mike Nunn, made a pyramid of cotts in the centre of the green. We then had a countdown to bowl at these, not knowing until afterwards that only two of the cotts were winners. This disappointed Ann Lilley, who was nearest, but was not near a winning cott. The two winners were Jenny Ronchetti and Keith Crabbe, SCBA Deputy President Elect.
The match players then took their places for the competition between the President`s team and the President Elect`s team. Unusually, after 10 ends there was a break for tea and cake. Although some bowlers commented that being full of cream scones and cake did not help their performance, it was a very pleasant interlude. The match then continued to a conclusion at 21 ends, by which time the green was bathed in sunshine. As is the custom, even though the total number of shots scored by each team may suggest otherwise, the match was won by the President`s team. Rosemary, Elaine Felgate and Margie Robinson were the President`s winning rink and the highest winning rink for the President Elect`s team was Mel Cole, Linda Nunn and Pat Jennings,
The Borough of Eye Club provided an excellent after match meal, enjoyed by all. Afterwards Rosemary made a short address. Linda Nunn, (standing in for President Elect Sadie Church) awarded the trophy to the `President`s` team. There were prizes for the winning rinks and a lovely floral display and garden vouchers were presented to Rosemary from the Suffolk lady bowlers.
The proceedings finished with a raffle, which took quite a while as there had been so many generous donations. A total of 240 pounds approx. was raised. Gifts made to Rosemary`s chosen charities, St Elizabeth`s Hospice and the East Anglian Children`s Hospice totalled 440 pounds.
To close the proceedings, two celebration cakes (one fruitcake, the other sponge) were cut and distributed. A fitting end to an excellent occasion.
Later a note of thanks was received from Rosemary.
Note of Thanks.
Just to say a big thank you to all of those who helped to make President`s Day such an enjoyable event.
My, thanks to all of those who helped me to prepare for the day and those who helped in so many ways on Saturday.
To all our bowlers past and present for making the effort to take part.
It is always a great pleasure to see people catching up with friends and renewing old acquaintances.
Thank you also to SCWBA for the beautiful flowers that were presented to me at the end of the meal. They are truly magnificent.
Thanks also for the Garden Vouchers I received; I will look forward to purchasing something that will be a permanent reminder of such a magical day.
This was the start of the Associations Diamond Jubilee celebrations. .
This year we were celebrating the three competitions that were first contested in 1959, The 2 Wood Singles, The Pairs Trophy and the 2 Wood Rinks.
It was good to see past and current winners of these three competitions with us on our special day and to recognize their achievements. I am sure that there will be many more successes for Suffolk in the coming years.
Finally thank you so much for all the cards and good wishes and for your generous donations to my chosen charities.
The final total was 440 pounds which I spit equally between East Anglian Children`s Hospice and St Elizabeth`s Hospice.
Well done, your generosity is really appreciated.
I look forward to seeing many of you again this season and to supporting our County Champions when they reach Skegness.
Very best wishes Rosemary

The Borough of Eye Bowls Club hosted the first home game of the season for the Donald Steward Team. The North Cambs. side set quite a challenge for our ladies. Half way through the game all rinks were just a few shots apart, but with North Cambs. in control overall. Suffolk fought back well in the later stages of the game and capitalised better on their chances. The first rink to finish, led by Sandy Sargent, was even into the last end, but our triple managed to take a one to win 23-22. Sadly, this situation was reversed on the next rink to finish, where Pat Jenning`s triple lost 21-22. Suffolk won on two out of the remaining three rinks, with Ann Lilley`s triple gaining the best result, 6 shots ahead (28-22). Jackie Whitlock`s triple fought back to win the last end by 2 shots, but it was not enough and they went down 21-23. Mary Rayner`s triple had a good win, 23-19. The end result was a very satisfactory overall win by 8 shots, 116-108, gaining 14 points to 4. After two rounds of the Donald Steward competition, Suffolk has equal points to Norfolk, but is second in the table on shot difference.

There were mixed fortunes in the first matches for our County teams on Wednesday 29th May. At the Donald Steward game at St Ives Bowls Club the ladies did very well on tricky rinks to get the better of the Hunts ladies. Our team won on 4 of the 5 rinks, thus scoring 8 points. Suffolk also had the higher number of shots overall 122-95, thus scoring another 8 points to give a win by 16 points to Hunts` 2 points.
The new rink of Margie Robinson (Yoxford), Elaine Felgate (Dennington) and Pat Jennings (Ixworth) had the highest win, 32-14, to claim the thimbles. A spirited fight back by Joy Squire, Maggie Page and Mary Rayner helped the team to the overall 27 shot win. A good afternoon was had by all and the rain held off although it was rather chilly!
The results were not so good for the Jubilee Vase team at Somersham Bowls Club. They managed to win on 2 rinks and draw on 1, so sharing the 10 points available, but the team total of 92 shots wasn`t enough to match the Hunts` total of 110 shots. The result was a 5-13 defeat for the Suffolk ladies. The thimbles were presented by SCWBA President, Rosemary Gyford, to Jean Batley, Angela Monden and Skip, Sue Bryenton- Rochard.
The next game for the Donald Steward team is on June 5th against N Cambs, at Borough of Eye Bowls Club starting at 1pm. The following Wednesday, June 12th, both Suffolk teams travel to Norfolk, the Jubilee Vase playing at Martham Bowls Club and the Donald Steward playing at Acle Bowls Club starting at 1pm.
