2019 national finals Newark

By Sally Smith    25/03/19    1 comments

Harry carver Team Trophy: After winning the Harry Carver in 2018, it was a disappointment to the Suffolk Team to achieve only a mid-table result at the 2019 Newark Indoor Finals. Early losses to Hunts and Norfolk, were followed by wins over North Cambs and Northants resulting in 10 points overall, level with Humberside, but with a smaller shot difference. Although not able to match last year`s result, Linda Nunn reported that the Suffolk players enjoyed the day.

The individual competitions at Newark started on Wednesday 24th April and Suffolk lady bowlers were in action through to Saturday 27th. The 8-rink bowls centre is an impressive venue and play in all competitions was of a very high standard. Although there were some strong performances from the Suffolk ladies, they were unable to raise their game sufficiently to progress to the concluding rounds of their competitions. The full results for SCWBA players can be found in the Indoor Competitions section of the website.

EWBF 4 Bowl Singles: This competition commenced on Thursday 25th. Sue Bryenton-Rochard was drawn against a strong North Essex player. The match started well for Sue, who had a 2 shot lead after 11 ends, but she was affected by a wrist injury later in the game and was only able to take two further shots. The 21-12 result did not represent Sue`s strong play earlier in the game.

EWBF 4 Bowl Senior Singles: Margaret Thorpe represented Suffolk again this year and had the benefit of a bye in the first round. Experience certainly played a part in her round 2 win against Lincolnshire 21-20. The Lincs opponent initially went into a considerable lead, only to see it gradually eroded by determined play from Margaret. It was fitting that this exciting match was eventually decided with a measure. Sadly, in the semi-final, Margaret was unable to produce a similar late match rally and was beaten by North Essex 21-13.

EWBF Pairs: The Suffolk representatives, Paula Gooch and Lesley Alexander, came up against strong opposition from the pair from Northants and were defeated 8-19 in the first round.

EBF Mixed Pairs: Suffolk were represented by Shirley Plummer and Andrew Pulford in this competition, drawn in the first round against Cleveland. Shirley played steadily throughout the game, but Andrew was unable to find his usual level of accuracy and they lost 9-18 to the eventual winners of the Northumberland Trophy.

EWBF 2 Bowl Rinks: In the first round Paula Gooch, Lesley Alexander and Thelma Tasker played steadily against North Cambs. and held their lead through most of the match to win comfortably 23-14. Sadly, in the second round, played later in the day, Suffolk came up against a strong Lincolnshire triple and were defeated 24-9.

EBF Mixed Rinks: Carol Pybus, John Sewell and David Sewell were matched against North Essex in the first round. After a nervous start the Suffolk players settled into the game, assisted by gaining a four in the 10th end. In the 15th end the Suffolk skip played a superb saving shot to take out both the opponent`s counting bowls, resulting in 2 shots to Suffolk. The match continued to be well fought to the end, with Suffolk eventually winning 19-16. However, later in the day, their second-round match was disappointing, with the Suffolk triple losing to Cleveland 27-8.

Suffolk County Bowls Association Indoor Finals 2019

By Sally Smith    25/03/19    0 comments

Suffolk women bowlers were again in action at the SCBA Indoor finals, held at Ipswich Bowls Club on the 16th and 17th March 2019. In the semi-finals of the mixed pairs S.Plummer and A.Pulford won 19-11 against J.Blowers and A.Blowers and there was a close win for C.Pybus and D.Sewell over J.Truin and R.Goodchild, 18 -17. In the 2-Bowl mixed rinks R.Goodchild, D.Goodchild and J.Truin progressed to the final with a 21-8 win against P.Quilliam, K.Culley and J.Whitlock and in the other semi-final D.Sewell, J.Sewell and C.Pybus won 19-16 against L.Alexander, S.Pleasance and M.Payne.

The under 25 competition was completed on Saturday 16th. Poppy Childs, aged 8 and a half, from Yoxford had a 21-15 win over C.Cooper in her semi-final and went on to play a spirited game against Andrew Pulford, considerably her senior in age and experience. Sadly the final was an unequal contest, but Poppy won admiration for her confident approach to the game.

Finals day saw wins for women players from the Rookery Club. In the Mixed Pairs S.Plummer and A.Pulford won 23-14 against C. Pybus and D. Sewell. The 2-Bowl Mixed rinks resulted in a 20-10 win for D.Sewell, J.Sewell and C.Pybus against R.Goodchild, D.Goodchild and J.Truin. Trophies were presented by S.C.B.A President, Barrie Davis. The winning finalists will represent Suffolk in the National Federation Indoor Finals in Newark from April 23rd to 28th.

S.C.W.B.A. Indoor Competition Finals 2019, Saturday 2nd March

By Sally Smith    05/03/19    0 comments

The 2019 indoor competitions, played throughout the season, culminated in an excellent finals day on 2nd March, with a warm welcome for both players and supporters from Sole Bay Bowls Club in Southwold.

The morning saw the 4 bowl Senior Singles won by Margaret Thorpe and the 2 bowl Pairs won by Paula Gooch and Lesley Alexander. These matches were followed by the 4 bowl singles, won by Sue Bryenton-Rochard. The most competitive match of the day was the concluding competition, the 2 bowl Triples. Skips Thelma Tasker, with Paula Gooch and Lesley Alexander, and Margaret Beck with Glenis Harvey and Celia Hacker, led their blocks to a very tight match. In the 17th end Margaret took the jack off the green when one shot down. The replayed end resulted in two shots to Margaret`s block, giving them a 15-11 lead. In the 18th end a further two shots increased their lead to a seemingly unassailable 17-11. However, an exciting fight back in the last three ends from Thelma`s block, including a three on the 21st end, won them an extra end. Continuing to reflect this closely contested match, the extra end was won on a tight measure. With the final score line of 18-17, it was a match where Margaret`s block were definitely runners-up, not losers, and the high level of skill displayed was greatly enjoyed by the supporters at Sole Bay.

At the closing of the day Chairman Mrs Linda Nunn, together with our President, Mrs Rosemary Gyford, thanked all those who had contributed to planning and organising this successful event, especially the excellent refreshments provided by the club. Thanks were due to Mike Nunn for umpiring. Rosemary expressed our pleasure that the men`s Suffolk County President, Mr Barrie Davis was able to be with us. The players and supporters were encouraged to promote involvement in the indoor competitions for the 2019/20 indoor season. Entry forms will be available at Area finals and then at County finals, as well as from Area Secretaries. The day concluded with the presentation of trophies to the winners by President Rosemary Gyford.

The Annual Presentation Luncheon

By Sally Smith    02/06/18    0 comments

Ufford Park again proved to be an excellent location for the annual presentation luncheon. We were pleased to be joined at lunch by the President of the SCBA, Trevor Lord, who made an interesting presentation. We were also addressed by our President, Rosemary Gyford. The 2017-18 season was especially memorable with the Suffolk ladies team achieving indoor honours, while the Donald Steward and Silver Jubilee teams both progressed to play at the National Finals at Skegness. In August in Skegness, such was the success of the women`s and men`s representatives, that the teams gained both the victrix ludorum and victor ludorum trophies, a rare achievement. Following this highly successful season, there were many National trophies on show at the lunch as well as the trophies won at County level. The County trophies were presented to the winners and runners up after the meal

SCWBA Novices Singles Competition

By the Press Secretary    02/09/18    0 comments

As the Federation bowls season draws to a close, ladies who have been bowling for less than a year are invited to take part in the County Novices competition. This provides new bowlers with a gentle introduction to taking part in County Competitions and allows them to compete against ladies with similar experience. This year the competition was held at Sweffling Bowls Club and attracted 8 ladies from bowls clubs around the County. Spectators and officials were impressed by the standard of bowling in the 10-end matches played as a round robin in the morning. The final between Amy Finch and Maria Reeder, both from Thurlton BC, was very enjoyable to watch with many ends having tight heads. It took 28 ends for Amy to finally get the better of Maria and win 21- 16 but throughout both bowlers showed that they will be a force to be reckoned with in future seasons.

Round Up of Suffolk performances at National Federation Bowls Finals 2018.

By the Press Secretary    27/08/18    6 comments

It should come as no surprise that the excellent weather this summer enabled good bowling conditions for most weeks this season. The County scene produced some excellent matches with both the Men`s Adams and Newton County teams winning their National Inter-county Southern sections and progressing to the National finals at Skegness. The Adams won very easily against National debutants Cleveland, and the Newton team also won their final against Nottinghamshire in what was a very close match throughout and was won on the very last end of the final rink to finish. Nail- biting stuff of the highest order to the delight of the many travelling supporters from Suffolk.

Both the Donald Steward and Silver Jubilee Vase Ladies teams did very well to reach the National Finals but sadly were runners up to Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire respectively. During the season Jean Batley and Joy Squire were presented with their 100 match badges having both played in Suffolk County teams for the past 15 years.

In the Individual National Finals, the week did not start particularly well, with some well-fancied individuals and rinks losing games in which many believed they might be successful. But come Friday afternoon two Suffolk bowlers had fought through some tough games and earned the right to contest the final of their individual disciplines. Phil Quilliam of Otley BC had some minor scares on the way to a well- deserved success in the Men`s Secretaries Final, swiftly followed by Sue Deeves of Old Newton BC who overcame a very tough opponent on a difficult rink in the Ladies Secretaries Final. Friday afternoon also gave Suffolk supporters great hope for the Saturday Finals as Paul Cook of Ixworth BC had reached the Men`s Senior Singles final after some excellent performances and Sandy Sargeant of St Botolphs BC had fought nerves and tough opposition to reach the Ladies 2 bowl Singles Final.

Then it was the turn of the of the younger bowlers to strut their stuff and they duly obliged with Ryan Claxton of Thurlton BC and Georgie Marwood also of Thurlton BC reaching the Open Under 25s 2 bowl pairs Final. Ryan was not finished yet and proceeded to reach the Final of the Men`s Under 25s 2 bowl singles with some fine bowling, something he had produced throughout the week of competitions. So Suffolk followers had several players to support on the final day of competition, and what a day that turned out to be with ALL FOUR finals going the way of Suffolk bowlers. Not only did Suffolk bowlers win six individual competition trophies, but both of our County Presidents, Trevor Lord and Rosemary Gyford, were delighted to find out that each would be presented with a National Trophy, the Victor Ludorum for the Men and the Victrix Ludorum for the Ladies, for the County with the most points accumulated throughout the week of both team and individual competitions. This was the icing on the cake for two individuals who had served three years of office culminating in the big finish at Skegness.

The weather had been kind to bowlers, supporters and officials making for a splendid week of quality bowls competition. Other Suffolk bowlers performed well without progressing to the latter stages of the week, but did their County proud with good performances, notably the Thorndon BC trio of Margaret Thorpe, Margaret Cattermole and Christine Aldous who reached the semi-final of the Ladies 3 bowl triples, Sue Deeves who also reached the semi-final stage of the 4 bowl singles, Emma Herrieven of Yoxford BC who was beaten semi-finalist to the eventual winner of the Ladies Under 25s singles and Sheree Kemp and Doreen Coppen of Thorndon BC who reached the semi-finals of the ladies pairs, having had to play all 3 games on one day. Well done to everyone who helped make it another memorable week for Suffolk Federation Bowls.

SCWBA County Competition winners 2018

By the Press Secretary    09/06/18    6 comments

The Suffolk County Women`s Bowls Association (Federation) County Semi Finals and Finals were played in glorious sunshine at Fressingfield Bowls Club last weekend. Spectators were treated to some close, exciting games with several players bowling outstanding ends. There were several nail-biting finishes on what were often very tricky rinks. This year`s County President, Rosemary Gyford, put up a very spirited performance on her home green only losing by 2 shots to Jenny Ronchetti after 33 ends in the final of the Senior Singles. Suzanne Deeves once again showed what a consistent bowler she is, beating Joy Squire in the 4 Bowl Singles and Mel Cole in the Secretaries Singles. The U 25 Singles produced some very good bowling from both players with Emma Herrieven, last season`s winner, eventually gaining the upper hand to beat Emma Jessop. There were some very good heads in the 3 Bowl Rinks Final which seemed to be going the way of the ladies from Thorndon. However, their opponents were beginning a fighting comeback, holding all 6 shots when the Skips went to the mat. Much to the relief of the 2 Margarets and to the disappointment of their opponents, skip Christine Aldous bowled a perfect bowl to draw the shot and claim another end on their way to victory.

Area D ladies were the emphatic winners of the Victrix Ludorum having won 6 of the County titles.

All County Champions will represent Suffolk at the National Finals in Skegness in the week beginning Aug 20th.

Mixed fortunes for Suffolk Ladies

By the Press Secretary    13/06/18    6 comments

The EBF National President, Jean Phillips, received a warm welcome when she visited the County to meet the Suffolk and Norfolk County teams.

Suffolk County Women`s Bowls Association Jubilee Vase team started their season at St Botolph`s Bowls Club with a superb win against their old adversary, Norfolk. Taking 15 points to Norfolk`s 3 was a tremendous achievement showing Suffolk ladies` determination to beat Norfolk after being 19 shots down at 15 ends. Both sides had some telling bowls throughout the game, skips often making crucial changes to the result of the end with their final bowl. Suffolk used the advantage of the Federation rule that allows changes in playing position with good effect at times and slowly chipped away at Norfolk`s lead over the final 10 ends. A victory was within sight at 20 ends with the home side only 1 shot behind and a magnificent push over the last 5 ends saw a 4-shot victory for Suffolk.

C. Warrington, S. Lilley, J. Truin 19-28;
P. Gooch, M. Robinson, M. Lambert 21-18;
M. Coles P. Ward, S. Rochard 24-19;
J. Batley, S. Church, E. Roberts 19-19;
C. Coleman, A. Craigie, M. Beck 26-21;

SCWBA Donald Steward Trophy team had started their season on June 13th with a very comfortable win over the ladies from North Cambridgeshire at March Town Bowls Club. With a victory of 18-0 under their belts, Suffolk ladies were eager to repeat this performance against Norfolk ladies at the Borough of Eye Bowls Club on June 20th. Sadly, it was not to be, with the afternoon resulting in a win on only one rink. Joy Squire, Maggie Page and Skip Mary Rayner ensured that Suffolk did at least take 2 points from Norfolk this season. However, a 26-shot deficit overall was a very disappointing outcome for everyone.

E. Felgate, E. Aldred, C. Aldous 12-25;
S. Hender, P. Jennings, A. Lilley 12-31;
S. Kemp, J. Ronchetti, Y. Harper 20 -23;
D. Mills, J. Whitlock, S. Sargeant 20 -25;
J. Squire, M. Page, M. Rayner 30 -16;
